Social Discourse for Historical Academia and Historical Research from the 1950s to 1970s: Focusing on Sasangge and The Quarterly Changbi

  • 초록

In the historical academia in South Korea from the 1950s to the 1970s, there were historians who communicated with an informed public through journals to fulfill social agendas by carrying out historical research and historical discourse. This paper reviews their historical research and the process of social discourse that resulted from their research. The members of the Korean Historical Association, which was established in the aftermath of the Korean War, participated as writers and editorial members of the Sasangge in the 1950s and contributed to the formation of a discourse for democratization that was anti- dictatorial and anti-monopolistic. At this time, the historical discourse, which served as the foundation for theories of democracy and modernization, was the West's modernization model or democratization model as suggested by western historical scholarship. The Association for Korean Historical Studies, which was established in 1967 by researchers who sought to overcome the challenges of identity posed by the colonial framework, offered the “Theory of Intrinsic Development” and “Historical Consciousness in an Age of National Division” for historical discourse. Through The Quarterly Changbi, these scholars were able to communicate their historical discourses with scholars in other disciplines, as well as the informed public. Through such cooperative efforts, researchers who worked closely with The Quarterly Changbi created a forum for resistance and counter-proposals that represented the era, including the theory of national economy and the Minjung Theology. However, the general direction and structure of the Association for Korean Historical Studies in the late 1970s could not sufficiently absorb the Minjung theory or contemporary history research which sprang up in Korean society and the discipline of the social sciences. This served as the background for the birth of a new historical association in the 1980s.
