A Study of Dong-Hyeok Jeon's Epic The Old Man Park
When Dong-Hyeok Jeon was born in 1910, the Korean Empire was about to go under the occupation by Japan's force. He, a poet, was born in the Maritime Province of Siberia ruled by Russia. and deceased in 1985 in Uzbekistan.Dong-Hyeok Jeon was working for a newspaper publishing company, Lenin Standard for many years, and he was a member of the Writers Association of Russia. The Old Man Park is an iliad which was published in whole space of the third pages of Lenin Standard on November 8th 1967.The main character, the The Old Man Park, was participated in Vladivostok War in 1922. One old Korean man from Koryo, distinguished himself in Russian Civil War as a member of The Koryo Revolution Volunteer Army and fought for The Red Army against The White Army and Japan. Although he was displaced to the Central Asia by force, his work won the praise of the Party as a 'brown-shirts' in the agricultural product line. When Germany and Russia rushed war, the The Old Man Park, gave his fealty to the Communist Party by submitting a written petition asking for volunteer work in a mine by The Ural Mountains. After the war, he was one of the hard-working workers at the collective farm and that made his family well-off and had a happy 70th birthday party, which made the Russian government believe that he was a good model of desirable-Koryo people.Dong-Hyeok Jeon expressed through the iliad that the deportation happened in 1937 turned out to be the better one to all Koryo people so they all should be thankful to Russia Communist Party. What this means is that the theme of this iliad about the deportation of Koryo people in the Maritime Province of Siberia is a different perspective from what we have known.
