세종 3년 上王 太宗의 漢陽都城 改築의 정치사적 의미
Political Meaning of the Abdicated King(上王) Taejong's Renovation of the Hanyang Capital Fortress(漢陽都城) in the 3rd year of King Sejong's reign
In the 3rd year of King Sejong's reign, the Hanyang Capital was renovated as the fortress surrounding the city, which had originally been constructed as an earthen wall(土城), was replaced by a stone fortress(石城). This was the fortress that constituted the basic parameters of the fortress that remains today, and we can see it would have been a considerably reinforced version compared to its predecessor. This renovation of the Han'yang Capital fortress coincided with the naming of King Sejong's eldest son (later Munjong) as the Crown prince. It was part of an effort to end all confusions and scandals, which were partly caused by the "Taek'hyeon(擇賢)" efforts to recruit candidates for governmental officials, and also the politics led by abdicated King Taejong. Sejong needed to declare the beginning of a new era, with himself at the helm and which would be followed by his own son Munjong. The renovation of the Capital fortress was another symbolic gesture displaying the stable nature of the dynasty itself. It was a painful task for the people recruited for construction, but reinforcing the capital fortress was reassuring enough for the dynasty and the public. Kings Taejo and Taejong built the country and laid out the foundation, and Sejong was trying to lead the dynasty into a new era, which had to govern and manage(守成) the country.
