ADHD symptoms and stress level and stress response behavior of elementary school students
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between ADHD symptoms and stress level and stress response behaviors of elementary school students. In Seoul and Incheon educational regions, 1,182 4-6th sixth grade students of 4 schools participated in this study. Results showed that the ADHD symptoms of the students had significant relationships with their stress level and types of stress response behaviors. In particular, students with inattention symptoms tended to experience higher level of stress than those with hyperactivity/impulsiveness symptoms. Furthermore, the analysis of interaction effects of ADHD symptoms and demographic variables on the stress level and stress response behaviors indicated that female students with ADHD symptoms were more likely to experience higher level of stress and use impulsive type of stress response behavior than male students with ADHD symptoms. In addition, students with ADHD symptoms who had a friend were more likely to experience lower level of stress than those without a friend. Also, students with ADHD symptoms who had a very close friend tended to employ better stress response behavior such as cognitive reframe and rational problem solving compared to those without a close friend.
