艮齋와 華西學派의 心說論爭의 핵심 쟁점과 그 의미
Central Arguments and End of dispute of Clarification of the Mind between the Kanjae and the Hwaseo School

    It is said that the arguments of Clarification of Mind between Kanjae(艮齋) and the Hwaseo School(華西學派) was the controversial of the assessment of the principle(li) and mind. One is claimed that it is the proper approach of thinking and practice alongside with principle whist the other maintained that present the unmovable principle by the movable vital force (qi). The controversial argument was an extension of principle and vital force in mid-Joseon Dynasty. Hwaseo School was criticized that the notion of “the mind is the vital force” of Yulgok have tendency of vital force centralism. To avoid vital force centralism, the mind that is administrator of human nature and emotions that has to be a principle central. Therefore, it is said that the mind is principle. On the contrary, Kanjae was more straightforward to Yulgok's idea: “the mind is the vital force”. He asserted that the mind is the vital force and the principle is immanence among the vital force of the mind. Both of them are agreed to what the mind is the synthesis of principle and the vital force but the perspectives are different. By Kanjae, he displayed that principle is doing nothing but the vital force is active, subsequently the dichotomy of principle and the vital force deliver the conclusion that of qi have following the li and it is the way not to take a false step. Therefore, the administrative mind have to follow the instruction of li called the formulation of nature is master and the mind is disciple(性師心弟說). However, Jungam(重菴) of Hwaseo School is against the formulation, according to him, the mind is the governor of body due to the li in the center of mind. Therefore, li is the one and in this sense the mind is li to elude the vice of vital force centralism. On the contrary, Kanjaeasserted that Jungam's notion is not principle centralism but mere vital force centralism, for my theorem is the true meaning of principle central and heaven rooted leaning(主理本天之學). The disputes were initiated that the sense of impending crisis of domestic and international. In the devastating situation, they are groping for the solution of keeping of heavenly principle and realization the morality of Confucianism. However, they have failed to reach the agreement due to the difference of ways of cultivation and sense of actual realties. The dispute led us a chance to reevaluate the meaning of principle centralism and vital force centralism. And it is presentation of the endeavors of how to keep of heavenly principle and realization the morality of Neo-Confucianism in the Joseon Dynasty scholars.
