한국장승의 형태에서 보여지는 조형미에 관한 연구-목장승을 중심으로-
A Study on Aesthetic Value Seen from the Shapes of Korean Jangseung -Centered on Wood Jangseungs-

    The intention of this study is in miserable realitythat Jangseungs found easily at the entrances ofvillages are disappearing gradually in extremelymodernized society. Though shapes and looks of villageJangseungs are different, social aspects containing joysand sorrows of times which were deeply settled incivilian culture can be seen. Meanwhile, studies on art system targeting thehigh class society in our traditional cultural arts havebeen actively conducted, and presently the studies havebeen continued. But, in a situation that sufficient studiesare not conducted about culture and arts systems ofordinary people, presence of village Jangseungs doesnot finish as the roles of traditional culture but settlesdown in our traditional art culture. Thus, the purposeis to find superiority of Korean ethnic culture and arts,by analyzing creativity and formativeness morepositively in artistic aspects. The study method focuses on wood Jangseungsleft most nationally, by analyzing them in the artisticaspects rather than studying them as a part of traditionculture, it is tried to consider artistic worth of ourculture by extracting Korean aesthetic value. Althoughvillage Jangseungs have disappeared a lot, we couldoften face them from which time is felt at the roadsidesto villages or big temples. Jangseungs as a medium thatjoys and sorrows of village people hope to be solvedhave lived while keeping village entrances or roads likechief gatekeepers. They have had diverse roles inpeople's minds such as preventing epidemics, becomingmilestones or landmarks, or sometimes becomingtraditional beliefs that prosperity and fortune ofdescendants are prayed, and so on. Common things in shapes of village Jangseungs arethe characteristic of a material of wood and the mediumrole between humans and the sky, so they have a verticalshape from the ground to the sky. Also, by deformingand symbolizing faces of humans and carvinginscriptions on the front part of their bodies, or writingdown names with calligraphy, the roles were granted. Manufacturers of Jangseungs who tried to overcomesorrows of lives made and erected them impromptu byprojecting intactly types of their lives that they longedfor. Therefore, a sense of beauty which can be said like“intention (technique) from un-intention(no-technique)” can be found from Jangseungs. Inconclusion, studies should be conducted with moreinterests in Jangseungs from the art-historical oraesthetic viewpoints among Korean folk art culture, andexcellent formativeness of our traditional culture shouldbe shed light on.
