Politics That Wins People's Heart : A Comparative Study between “Zhongyong Pian” of Liji and the Xing Zi Ming Chu in the Chu Bamboo Slips from Guodian
From the time of Confucius, Confucianism took the rule of virtue that wins people's heart on the basis of virtue as ideal of politics. This kind of politics becomes possible only when it is based on trust in human being essentially. The target of this thesis or politics of “Zhongyong Pian” 中庸篇 of Liji 禮記 and Xing Zi Ming Chu 性自命出 in the Chu Bamboo Slips from Guodian 郭店 also inherits the philosophy of Confucius and claims to stand for the rule of virtue. For this reason, both of the above two take the politics that wins the heart of people as the ideal. Needless to say, to realize this, strict and thorough morality is essential, and both of the above two agree with each other in that unceasing self-cultivation through Confucian education and learning is required. However, as to the concrete method or how to realize it, there is a clear difference between the above two literature. The reason for this is that definition on human nature is different from each other. As for the main difference, while Zhongyong presents a discourse based on human nature, Xing Zi Ming Chu presents a discourse that is based on mind and emotion. In other words, while Zhongyong takes only human nature as having derived from Heaven, Xing Zi Ming Chu regards both human nature and emotion as having derived from Heaven. Because of this difference, while Zhongyong regards emotion as target for control or suppression by rituals, Xing Zi Ming Chu regards emotion as the source of rituals. The reason why emotion is regarded as the source of rituals is that it was made on the basis of emotion which is inner nature of a human being. This is to view the possibility of preserving social order not in the force or regulation from outside but in autonomy or spontaneity that comes from within a human being. As the starting point of looking at human nature is different from each other, politics that is aimed at by Zhongyong and Xing Zi Ming Chu is also different. To put it in general terms, while Zhongyong regards realization of nine principles that is based on Cheng 誠 (truth) or human nature as the ideal of politics, Xing Zi Ming Chu regards realization of politics that communicates while sharing the communion that is based on emotion as well as the value standards and emotion between the ruler and the ruled as the ideal.
