An Ethical Reflection on Responsible Procreation and the Virtue of Chastity

    Responsible procreation is a human act (actus humanus) structured by intelligence and free will. This paper deals with the encyclical, Veritatis Splendor, Number 78 in detail, based on the perspective of the acting person by Martine Rhonheimer, elucidating the fact that the morality of the human act for responsible procreation depends primarily and fundamentally on the 'object' rationally chosen by deliberate will. To grasp the object of an act which specifies that an act done morally, it is necessary to place oneself in the perspective of the acting person. The object of the act of willing is in fact a freely chosen kind of behaviour. In this paper, we investigate the different attitudes between periodic continence based on the virtue of chastity and contraception. To choose the first case means that the deliberate will of the acting person (in this case both husband and wife) is in conformity with the common good - that is their conjugal love that relates to responsible procreation, maintaining the inseparable relationship between conjugal union and procreation. To choose the latter indicates that the acting person intends to break the relationship that is against their conjugal love and therefore their common good. Here, the object is the proximate end of a deliberate decision which determines the act of willing on the part of the acting person. Thus, it refers both 'object' and the predicate 'morally evil' to the choice of behavior and not simply to behavior. For this reason, a good intention is not itself sufficient for responsible procreation, but a husband and wife also need a correct choice of actions. Thus, responsible procreation in terms of the correct choice of actions will lead the husband and wife to acquire complete mastery over themselves and their emotions in practicing the virtue of chastity. This is presented the encyclical Humanae Vitae Number 21. Ultimately, it brings about the perfection of the person with their correct choice of actions in conformity with the good of the husband and wife with respect for the good morally relevant for them.
