Methodology and problem of practice in Blondel's philosophy

    In this paper, I elucidate the philosophical methodology and the problem of practice in Maurice Blondel's thought. His first and major work The Action (1893), immediately after its publication, has provoked a violent controversy and has become an object of contradictory attacks from both philosophers and theologians. Such criticism results from misunderstanding of Blondel's philosophical method. This study determines, by clarifying the exact meaning of his method, the relationship between philosophy and religion that he wants to constitute in his own way. For Blondel, the action and the practice, which belong to direct method, are self-sufficient, but this kind of direct method is only applied to those who use it. Accordingly, in order to provide the universal value of action, scientific or indirect method, i.e. science of practice is positively required. Indirect method is the way by which we examine the consistency of very different positions about problems of life without any premises. Further, indirect method draws the conclusion which results indirectly from their non-consistency. Blondel, through this indirect method, constructs the system of total conditions for the realization of human beings and reaches to the conclusion that human destiny depends on whether man chooses transcendental Being or not. At length, philosophy fulfills its mission by proposing the determination of human action as a strict duty. In this respect, Blondel's philosophy itself is identical to the methodology, thus, I examine his methodology in this paper so as to reveal the core of his philosophical thought. I intend to develop discussion in three parts. First, I show that Blondel's methodology is divided into both direct and indirect methods, of which I essentially deal with indirect method as it is included in philosophical spectrum in strict sense of the word. Secondly, I determine the relationship between immanence and transcendence, relationship which is indispensable to understand the status of philosophical methodology. Third, I establish the meaning of Philosophy of Action by discussing the limit and the effectiveness of philosophical methodology.
