영국 SOAS 월드뮤직여름학교의 아시아 음악교육
A study on the Asian Music Education in the World Music Summer School at SOAS in the U.K.

    This research is examined overall the programme of World Music Summer School at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) in the U.K. and primarily, focused on Asian music education. Since 2008, their World Music Summer School has created about 20 different new programs in each year and the total number is 152. However, except the number of courses that have been repeated in different years, the actual number of the programs that has been created is 50. The 50 different courses can be categorized by region. As the result of it, Asia region is 18, Africa is 6, Europe is 13 and Latin America is 5. Moreover, it can be classified as genre and it shows that vocal is 11 times, percussion 12, strings 5, wind music 2, dance 1 and mixed genre is 19 times. The 40% out of all the programs is covered by Asian region music course in the World Music Summer School. If we look at the detail of Asia region music program, 2 courses are created in each year in five Asia regions; Southwest Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia and Far-east Asia. Additionally, when the Asia area music programmes are categorised in genre of musical instruments, percussion has 25 courses (43.1%), mixed genre of musical instruments 16 (27.6%) and vocal 13 courses (22.4%). As the result of these, in order to set a Korean music program in World Music Summer School, 3 different plans are being suggested. First of all, it needs to keep and maintain a close relationship between the school and professionals who are experts of traditional of Korean Music. Secondly, the Korean music program should be developed as the way of the school needs. Finally, either the school secures that they have enough Korean music teachers or train people who can be at professional level to teach students in english. Since Korea recently has become to a multicultural society as followed by an era of internationalization, I hope that the result of the study helps Korea to cultivate Asian music professionals and I wish that it contributes to create a training system so it cultivates people who can introduce and teach Korean music to the world.
