조선 세조대의 勳臣 具致寬의 관직 생활과 특징
Public Office Career of Gu, Chi-Gwan(具致寬), the Meritorious Official, and His Character in the Reign of Sejo of Joseon
This study surveys the public office career of Gu, Chi-Gwan who served as a Yeonguijeong in the early Joseon era and examines the characteristics of his life. The political forces of this period are typically classified as Hungu and Sarim, but Gu's career in the public posts has salient facts that refuse this dichotomous classification. Although Gu, Chi-Gwan participated in Gyeyu Jeongnan (the Coup of 1453) and contributed to Sejo in the process to the coup, he was not included among the list of meritorious contributors of the coup. Notably, he was excluded from designated the title of Ikdae Gongsin (翊戴功臣), notwithstanding the fact that at that time he was one of the core cabinet members as Wonsang (院相). He was designated twice as meritorious personnel: Jwaik Gongsin (佐翼功臣) when Sejo ascended the throne, and Jwari Gongsin (佐理功臣) posthumously on the order of Seongjong. Among the four designations of titles happened during Gu's lifetime after Gyeyu Jeongnan, he only included in the list once. It is exceptional for the fact that he continuously stood by the king's at various major positions during his lifetime. On the contrary, Sin Sukju and Han Myeonghoe were designated all titles except Jeokgae Gongsin (敵愾功臣) in the same period. When the investiture of Jeokgae Gongsin subsequently formed a political force that held Sin and Han in check, Gu was not included in the title. Based on these historical facts, I reason that Gu, Chi-Gwan showed no prominent tendency to take part of political forces since he had a certain distance from the core political forces that included Sin Sukju and Han Myeonghoe and also did not participate in the opposition force. Based on analyzing the five character sketches written in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, the study concludes that although he was one of the contributors of the regime, he kept a certain distance from other contributors and instead was steadfast in his positions as a bureaucrat, concentrating on the maintaining and stabilizing the existing order that centered the king.
