The Characteristics of Yi Sebo's Sunchangpalgyeongga (Sijo Poems on the Eight Views of Sunchang)
This paper sought to analyze the spatial features of the eight views of Sunchang district in Jeolla-do province through nineteenth century literature and maps, and to review the characteristics of Yi Sebo's Sunchangpalgyeongga (Sijo Poems on the Eight Views of Sunchang), which consists of eight verses. Sunchangpalgyeongga is worth noticing in several ways. Primarily, it is the only work that represents the eight views of Sunchang district. The trend of choosing eight outstanding landscapes in each area and expressing them through literary works had been in existence since the Goryeo dynasty. This custom was applied to Sunchang district for the first time by Yi Sebo in 1860. In addition, it is also significant that the tradition of palgyeongsi(poems on the eight views), which had been unique to classical ?Chinese poetry, was spread to Korean vernacular poetry through Sunchangpalgyeongga. Yi Sebo seems to have selected the eight views of Sunchang based on direction: the northern region around Geumsan Mountain, the southern region across Gyeongcheon Stream, and the eastern region, where Jeokseonggang River flows. He also attempted to reveal the relationship between the views by correlating two scenes. Based on this point, it can be inferred that Sunchangpalgyeongga was also composed with the intention of connecting two verses. Verses 1-2 describe the landscape around Geumsan Mountain and its surroundings. The correlation of the two verses can be seen in their form; that is, their expressions and syntaxes are similar to each other. Also, the two verses commonly express the pleasure of drinking wine in wonderful scenery. The themes that connect verses 3-4 are bamboo trees and lotus flowers, which have long been famous in Sunchang district. Unlike other parts of the work, verses 3-4 are also related in their expression of the emotions of regret and loss. The mood is restored in verses 5-6 through the image of watching the moon while drinking. It is believed that verses 5-6, associated with Amisan Mountain, were composed at the most ideal spots for enjoying the moonlit night in Sunchang district. Verses 7-8 deal with the scenery around Jeokseonggang River and Jeokseongsan Mountain in the eastern side of Sunchang. It is worth noting that the vast fields and the leisurely river described in the two verses are vital landscapes that evoke the feeling of being at ease. Yi Sebo concluded the work by referring to the abundance and peacefulness of Sunchang district.
