Biomechanical Characteristic Analysis of Hip Joint Movement according to Elbow Injury on Pitching Motion in Baseball
The purpose of this study is to analyze the biomechanical characteristics of hip joint movement based on elbow injuries in baseball pitching motions, to present training methods for preventing injuries of baseball players, and to provide players and coaches with basic data to be used to efficiently improve their techniques. The subjects of this study were baseball pitchers at Y and S high schools registered as the players of the Korea Baseball Association in 2017. We selected four pitchers (group A) who did not have orthodontic elbow injuries or damages and four pitchers (group B) who were diagnosed with elbow injuries but participated in games. We analyzed variables by comparing image analysis and EMG analysis on the pitching motions between two groups. The results are as follows. The force generated by the lower half of the body during wind-up can be transferred through the torso to the rest of the upper half of the body only with efficient movements of the hip and shoulder joints. To achieve this, the muscles must coordinate to create an ideal pitching form. However, if the ball speed is increased even if the pitcher cannot make the movement effectively according to the principle of segmented sequence, the possibility of muscular imbalance and joint damage will increase. In addition, because injury to the main joints can be minimized when the muscular contributions are balanced, research on modeling the optimal pitching form must be continued.
