Content Validity of Motivation of Student Athletes for Choosing Sports
The purpose of this study was to extract the motivating factors of student athletes for choosing sports and to verify the validity of the constructive concept. A total of 260 student athletes currently enrolled in a sports middle or high school participated in this study. The motivating factors for choosing sports were extracted through an inductive content analysis and the constructive concept was verified by analyzing the content validity index (CVR) as well as its impact on and differences between the groups. First, 260 cases of motivation for choosing sports were extracted; these were categorized into general domains of active motivation, passive motivation, material motivation, and no motivation, and nine sub domains. Second, the constructive concept of motivation for choosing sports satisfied the minimum threshold of the content validity index (CVR) of 0.42. There were significant differences between groups for satisfaction with sports in the order of no motivation, active motivation, and material motivation. For will to continue, material motivation was significantly higher compared to passive motivation and no motivation. In terms of the impact of motivation for choosing sports, material motivation had the greatest positive (+) impact on satisfaction with sports, followed by active motivation. Material motivation predicated will to continue as a positive (+) variable. Thus, the validity of the constructive concept regarding the motivation of student athletes for choosing sports was verified.
