The meaning of King Yeongjo's foundation of Uiyeolmyo(義烈廟) in political history
This paper explained the political intentions of King Yeongjo by dealing with foundation of Uiyeolmyo(義烈廟), Shrine of Concubine Youngbin who was the real mother of Crown prince Sado and believed to have provided a decisive opportunity for her son's death, and organization of ceremonies. Concubine Yeongbin died shortly after a three-year mourning period of Crown prince Sado. King Yeongjo presided over all the proceedings in her funeral rites which was held in Jangdong, Yeoungbinbang, although she was the royal concubine. Uiyeolmyo(義烈廟), shrine of concubine Yeongbin was built in Yeongbinbang. It was made by lumber demolished from Sueunmyo(垂恩墓), shrine of Crown prince sado and included the precinct. In the funeral rites, King Yeongjo reviewed the ritual performed by the crown prince(世孫) and Hyegyeonggung(惠慶宮) to express emotion and reason, highlighting the status of Concubine Yeongbin, the mother of Crown prince Sado. And he built Haengjang(行狀), cemetery, and Pyouirok of King's writings(御製表義錄) for presenting Concubine Yeongbin's role in the death of Crown prince Sado. King Yeongjo ordered the death of Crown prince Sado at Hwiryeong-jeon(徽寧殿), Honjeon(魂殿) of Queen Jeongsung in Chang'gyeong-gung palace Moonjeongjeon and at that time he put forward his cause that Queen Jeongsung informed him the rebellion was coming. However, after the death of Concubine Yeongbin, 'The mother' who was a main agent of reporting treason changed from Empress Jeongsung to Concubine Yeongbin. In Pyouirok of King's writings(御製表義錄), King Yeongjo emphasized that at the crossroads of whether Concubine Yeongbin would choose between King Yeongjo or her son, she broke off the relationship between herself and her son for the sake of country and King Yeongjo. According to it, King Yeongjo restored position of the crown prince after death and built the shrine for restoring personal favor broken off by Conclude Yengbin. The reason why King Yeongjo decided name of Crown prince Sado and Concubine Yeongbin's grave to be 'Sueun(垂恩)' and 'Uiyeol(義烈)' was meant to honor this loyalty. Furthermore, as he applied Institution to Special Shrines(宮) and Low-level Mausoleums(園) to Concubine Yeongbin's grave and shrine which was applied only to relatives of King, he stressed her determination and contribution. It reflected King Yeongjo's intention to reinforce the royal line of the crown prince(世孫), a descendant of Concubine Yeongbin.
