The impressionistic music of Debussy was influenced by symbolic poetry, impressionistic painting and the traditional music of Asian countries. His music has a unique originality with strong French color and gets out of the tradition. He made a foundation for modern music based on the free technique, new sound, technique of music describing picture and rendered distinguished service to the music in the transition period from Romanticism to the 20th century. Particularly the change of harmony system made him one of the composer who made a great development in the music history. This music is composed of three movements. The first movement is composed of three sections which are mostly sonata form, the second movement is not totally but mostly rondo form, and the third movement is formed with circulating structure which repeats the themes. This music was composed one year before Debussy died. It shows his matured music techniques and the classic characteristics of France. He used traditional chords such as three and seven chords and properly applied fifth chord, triad chord, whole-tone scale and Church mode as well. Especially the harmonic structure in this music such as sudden composition change, parallel and symmetric harmonic structure is one of the subject which the player should highlight in playing this music. Various change of speed and dynamics and peculiar rhythm distribution, etc. are the characteristics of this sonata and a typical music trend of Debussy. The performance techniques such as Pizzicato, Saltato, Spiccato, Trill, Tremolo, Harmonics, Glissando, etc. are partly and effectively shown in this music and are the Debussy's characteristic performance technique which shows his remarkable music capacity. The important thing in performance is to clearly understand the relationship between vowel and consonant in music and play violin by harmonizing the location, speed and pressure of bow in expressing tone color. Subjective and persuasive expression of changing and symbolic expression based on this performance and dynamics can express the peculiar feeling and sentiment of Debussy. I hopes that this thesis is helpful for the player who plays this music.
