In his book, The Principles and Practices of Counseling and Psychical Cure, Gearld Corey said that the first step in counseling is for the counselor to be a human and that the most important means of counselors would be the counselor themselves. It means that the counselors should guide the interviewees into the positive direction by showing them the counselors' humane development. Thus, the counselors as a therapist should change and heighten themselves constantly. In this respect, a nursing pastorate paradigm by John Wesley would be a good example of the counselor's human quality and attitude. This thesis deals with a nursing pastorate paradigm by John Wesley in the aspects of personality, a curing pastorate, a folk medicine, a body and mind medicine, a group counseling, and social milieu. Wesley emphasized the importance of spiritual understanding of human. It means that a spiritual counseling should be done not only towards psychiatry but towards the prevention for the human development. It is an essential aspect in embodying the whole man. The integration of theology and psychology which is linked with the spirit has become an important aspect of counseling for the new recognition of human beings. In this respect, a paradigm by Wesley suggests to the counsellors today that a spiritual understanding of human beings is necessary. Another suggestion by Wesley is that he shows many counsellors a good example of a counsellor with a humane personality and attitude. Third, in the respect of study of counselling, his creative and practical study has founded a ground for future study of counselling. Finally, his theory contributed to the scholastic background and theory of counselling. Up to now, the scholastic background of counselling largely depends on a psychical cure. However, Wesley applied a psychical medicine, folk medicine, and cultural anthropology to the practice of counselling. Since the topics of today's counselling require a comprehensive discipline, his establishment of counselling method through the interdisciplinary approach is highly meaningful. There are many theories and practices of counselling for helping the human. However, before establishing the theory or practice of counselling, we should identify the nature of human beings. To prove the human mind scientifically is to limit the human value, and to confine human psychology within the boundary of sin and salvation means that human beings is no longer the topic of theology. In this respect, a paradigm by Wesley has a significance to us.
