The purpose of this study is to explore the possibilities of religious education in Korean elementary schools theoretically. So far, the religious education has been forbidden in Korean public schools, and now it is true. But the 7th Curriculum established by Korean Ministry of Education and Human Resources has opened the possibilities of religious education in public schools. Because one of the purports of 7th Curriculum was that Korean schooling will have to be changed from the view of the so-called "educational suppliers" to the "educational demanders". Therefore in so far as there are a certain educational demands, they need to be reflected in a school curriculum. This purport also applies to the religious education. As you know, the religion has been closely connected with human life. Human being must be very different from other beings in both reason and spirit. Various human civilizations have reflected the diverse interpretations of human being as having a spiritual trait. Education has been one important domain of human civilization as well as religion. Generally speaking, religious persons, at least they who have a sound religion, are more moral than them who are atheists or have little concern about a religion. But religion is not the same as morality or ethics. Because whereas religion is oriented toward the transcendence of real life, that is the sacred, but morality, the purity of real life, that is still the secular. As you know, the education of religion consists of both education about religion and religious education. The education about religion means teaching various religions from the neutral standpoint for students' more understanding of religion itself or religions. The religious education means teaching a certain religion from the its own standpoint for students' initiation into that religion. So the education about religion has been accepted as a part of social studies as a subject. But the religious education has been a subject of controversy in school curriculum esp. in a democratic and culturally diverse society. My assertion may be that the religious education can be accepted as a part of public schooling because religion has had some affirmative effects on human being and the typical role of schooling can be defined as an initiation into a certain worthwhile activities which have been inherited and developed through human history. I am sure that religious education is possible and important in public schooling, esp. elementary schools. Of course, I know that some people reject religious education because of its being liable to indoctrination. But I think that other kind of education as well as religious education can be hardly free from some indoctrination. So if a certain kind of education can lead students to desirable states of mind, then we need to suffer some minimum indoctrination willingly. The possible mode of religious education in elementary schools may be a kind of special-curricular activities in school. In this case, we will have to keep in mind those points: (i) the balance of various religions (ii) the agreement of parents (iii) the tolerance of other religions (iv) the calibers of teachers etc..
