    This study- was to investigate the change of lipids in serum and collagen concentration in connective tissues in ovariectomized rats of Punicar grnnatum L.(PG) ethanol extracts, ethyl acetate and ethyl ether fractions in an in vivo model. In order to elucidate the effects of PG ethanol extracts on the change of lipid concentration in rats, Sprague-Dawley female rats were randomly- assigned to groups as follows sham-operated rats (sham), ovariectomized control rats (OVX-control), ovariectomized rats supplemented ethanol extracts of PG seed at 5Omg/kg bw/day- (OVX-SDSO), ovariectomized rats supplemented ethanol extracts of PG seed at 200mg/kg bw/day(OVX-SD200, ovariectonuzed rats supplemented ethanol extracts of PG skin at 50mg/kg bw/day(OVX-SK50, ovariectomized rats supplemented ethanol extracts of PG skin at 200mg/k-g bw/day(OVX-SK200). PG ethanol extracts were orally supplemented at the level of 1mL per day for 7 weeks. The body weight gain, food intake and food efficiency ratio were not significantly different between groups by- t-test. The levels of total-cholesterol and triglyceride in serum were not changed by- supplementation of PG ethanol extracts. However the level of HDL-cholesterol in serum were lower in OVX-control, OVX-SD50 and OVX-SD200 than sham but OVX-SK50 and OVX-SK200 were higher than sham. These results suggest that ethanol extracts of PG skin were more effected than those of PG seed. To further investigate the effects of PG skin fractions on the change of lipid concentration in rats, Sprague-Dawley female rats were randomly- assigned to groups as follows sham-operated rats(sham), ovariectomized control rats (OVX-control), ovariectomized rats supplemented ethyl acetate fraction of PG skin at 2omgAg bw/day (OVX-EA), ovariectomized rats supplemented ethyl ether fraction PG skin at 20mg/kg bw/day (OVX-EE). PG skin fractions, OVX-EA and OVX-EE, were orally supplemented at the level of ImL per day for 6 weeks. The body weight gain, food intake and food efficiency ratio were not significantly different between groups by t-test. The levels of total-cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol in serum were lower in OVX-EA and OVX-EE than OVX-control. The level of HDL-cholesterol in serum were higher in OVX-EA and OVX-EE than OVX-control. Among these results, the supplementation of ethanol extracts and fractions of PG positively influenced on lipid concentration in serum. We investigated the ability of PG ethanol extracts, ethyl acetate and ethyl ether fractions of PG to prevent bone loss in ovariectomized rats, a model for postmenopausal osteoporosis. The change of collagen content was studied in bone, cartilage, skin and lung of ovariectomized rats. The effects of extracts and fractions of PG on the amount of collagen were examined by measuring hydroxyproline, which is a specific amino acid existing in collagen. In the ovariectomized rats supplemented by PG ethanol extracts, the amount of collagen more increased than those of OVX-control in bone, skin and lung. In these supplemented of PG skin ethyl acetate and ethyl ether fractions are higher than O`TX-control in skin and lung. These results indicate that PG extracts and fractions acts an important role on collagen synthesis of ovariectomized rats. In the future, these results can be further utilized for menopausal women.
