The Study about Actual Condition of Elementary School Students' Vocabularies Use and Traching method of vocabluaries Expansion

    Due to the wave of globalization and the expansion of cyber culture, a lot of loan vocabularies unknown their nationality are inundated in our life. Consequently, our Korean competence has been going backward. In 2001, we were shocked by the news that subjects are scored only 29.8 point in Language Norm Competence Test which is performed by Minister of Culture and Tourism targeting almost 1,000 elementary school students, middle school students, high school students, university students and common people(cited in editorial in JoongAng Ilbo, 18th, Jan,'02) That result is lower over 40% than that of test of 6 years ago. Hence, right korean education is strongly required. This study examined actual condition of 6th grade elementary school student's vocabularies use. After that, it studied problems about teaching vocabularies and searched their solution. In addition, it intended to help selection of basic vocabularies for education and educational vocabularies. In chapter 2, Quantitative organization of children's vocabularies was examined. Running words of the 10 subjects were 28,504, and different words were 8,727. That of examinee, Shin Kang were 2,819 and 862, respectively. But, Quantity of children's vocabularies was very various by sex, place, and individuals, so intended and systematic vocabulary teaching is needed. In syllable, a part of speech, a class of word and organization of words, right vocabulary teaching about easy words are required, in the contrary of dictionary or textbook. In chapter 3, frequency of vocabulary use were investigated. Running words of the examinee were 2,819, different words were 862, and repetitive frequency was mean 3.27 times, however the examinee overused a few words. In syllable, a part of speech, a class of word and organization of words, the frequency of high ranked frequency words were significantly prominent and the others were rapidly decreased. The properties of high frequency words were easy and comfortable words, mainly including mono-syllabic words and noun. It shows that children's vocabulary is not varied and intended and systematic vocabulary teaching is needed. In chapter4, Vocabulary teaching methods were studied. School curriculums include vocabulary teaching, but more specific and detailed teaching methods should be searched. U sing a various method such as vocabularies expansion, reading education, using dictionary and composition education, we should help children acquire new words and their usage. This study is planning to grip on actual condition of elementary school students' vocabularies use to understand Quantitative organization of children's vocabularies. The result is willing to make use on the foundation resources of the vocabulary education. This analysis makes us understand actual condition of elementary school students which lays disproportionate emphasis on particular parts. So vocabulary teaching should concentrate its efforts on vocabularies expansion, besides it ought to be more systematic and deliberate. Using a method of guidance such as vocabularies expansion, reading education and composition education, children's competence ought to be improved. But the subjects in this study were confined in part of ChungCheongnam-do, so cases are not sufficient enough to represent all of Korean elementary school student. Therefore it needs more representative and wide-ranging studies.
