Chitin fiber did not serve in acutal use because of lack of mechanical strength. Hence, in this study we paid attention to gain high strength and flexibility. As a result of mixing chitin with a little amount of cellulose, similar to chitin structure, we gained promising CHITULOSE (blendmer of chitin and cellulose) fiber. For this study we used an effective solvent system comprising dimethylacetamide(DMAc) containing 6% lithium chloride(LiCl), which gave syrupy CHITULOSE solutions that could be "wet" spun into methanol to yield continuous fibers. Among CHITULOSE fibers, when weight percent ratio of chitin/cellulose in DMAC-LiCl solvent was 1.5/0.2, we could catch the most flexible and strongest fiber by Instron test. Examining these fibers under the microscope after subcutaneous imbeding in rat proved they began to biodegrade in 14 days and completely done within 40 days. Therefore produced CHITULOSE fiber could be used for bioabsorbable suture and other applications such as biodegradable gauze and strong sweat absorptive fiber.
