    The effects of sucrose concentration, illumination, inoculum level, dimethylsulfoxide( DMSO ), and hormone on the production of phenolics were studied with Nicotiana tabacum. The effects of immobilization and bioreactor type on the phenolics production were also investigated. The optimum concentration of sucrose was found to be 3% (w/v). The call growth and production of phenolics were higher in continuous light condition ( 2500Lux ) than those of the standard condition ( 200Lux ). However, continuous dark condition resulted in the reduction of the production of phenolics even though the cell concentration was increased remarkably in comparison with that of standard culture. A proper inoculum level was found to be 10%(v/v), and DMSO reduced the production of phenolics. The optimum concentrations of NAA an kinetin were found to be 0.5mg/L. When Nicotiana tabacum was immobilized on calcium alginate, polyurethane foam and calcium alginate containing additives the yield of phenolics decreased compared to that of free call. In the airlift culture, the yield of phenolics by immobilized cell was increased about 6 times compared to that of free call. The yield of phenolics was almost kept constant up to 600 hours by using a fed-batch culture in the airlift bioreactor.
