The purpose of this study is to investigate the process of career decision marking and factors affection career planning of middle school students. And among various aspects of career planning, the process of choosing the pattern of high school(liveral arts school or technical school) is the central concern of this study. 352 students of the 3th grade middle school(male : 171, female : 181 ) were selected for this study. The selection was made through purposive sampling. The instrument employed was the questionaire consisted of 25 items. It was made through careful analysis of literatures and previous findings, and finally set up through the examination with specialists. Students' scholastic achievement level was classified into three groups according to the results of final examination of the first term this year. The data were analyzed by Computer. Frequency, percentile, and X^2 were computed. Major findings of this study may be summarized as follows. For convenience, students group who planned to enter liberal arts high school will be called Group A, and who planned to enter technical high school will be called Group B. First, there were great differences between groups in educational and occupational planning. Group A wanted higher education and more prestigious occupations than Group B. Second, it was found that main career decision maker was students them selves in both groups. And typical significant others influencing students' career planning were parents and teacher. Third, there were differences in the reasons of choosing certain high school pattern. In Group A, the major reason of choosing liberal arts high school was to have a good occupation, and in Group B, the major reason of choosing technical high school was attributed to scholastic deficit. Fourth, it was found that most of Group A decided finally high school pattern during the year of the first grade, but many of Group B were showed that they decided finally at the end of the third grade. Fifth, there was difference in persistency of career planning between two groups. Groups A was more persistent ant stable in career planning than Group B. Sixth, it was found that region, scholastic achievement level, and socioeconomic status of student's family were major variables affecting middle school student's career decision making. The results of this study showed that there were some differences between students group who planned to go to liberal arts high school and students group who planned to enter technical high school. Though this study was a fundamental one, it suggested the need of more systematic concerns on middle school students' career development and further research.
