Chemical pesticides which have been commonly used for crop protection have many problems such as high production cost, pest resistance and environmental hazards including human poisoning. Entomogenous fungi which attack living insects are very powerful means for microbiological insecticide. The purpose of this study is to investigate the culture conditions for mass production of Beauveria sp. C 208, Metarhizium sp. ARS 978 and M. sp ARS 2231. The temperature and pH range for optimal cultivation of three strains were 28℃ and pH 5.0 - 7.0, respectively. DP medium (dextrose 2%, peptone 1%) was determined as the proper seed cultures of three fungi. For Beauveria sp. C 208, 2%(w/v) rice straw and 0.6%(w/v) tryptone were found as the proper carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively after examination of cell mass, enzyme activities such as chitinase, protease and lipase and spore concentration. One percent of Molasses, 1%(w/v) distiller's dry solubles and 0.3%(w/v) CaCO₃ were found to be optinmal media for ARS 978 and 3%(w/v) of rice bran, 0.8%(w/v) hydrolyzed casein and 0.3%(w/v) K₂HPO₄ were found to be those for ARS 2231. From these results, in general, we found that mass production of strain and enzyme activiy depend on the kinds of carbon and nitrogen sources. But inorganic salts or other components have little effect on the cell mass and enzyme activity.
