This study, through research of the influence of the safety regarding overturning on the design and construction of rigid retaining walls, assumed the section within the sectional range of cantilever retaining walls as highlighted in a variety of literature both here and abroad. And using the representative lateral earth pressure theories of Coulomb and Rankine, have sought the static active lateral earth pressure according to the inclination of the backfill surface and the angle of friction. Besides, using this examined the safety in regard to overturning with the resultant operational position of the existing 0.33H and 0.4H, and the rotation center position of the existing Coduto's 0.1B to 0.3B, and Bruner's 0.5B transformed. As a result, since the conditions as shown in a variety of manuals and documentation found here and abroad, without any clear condition regarding the ground, are unanimously applying toe as the rotation center and the operation position of the resultant as 0.33H. Then, this must be changed, and the result inspections showed that there is a large difference in the factor of safety. It appears a more positive countermeasure should be sought for the problem of safety regarding overturning in the design and construction of retaining walls, henceforth verification through such things as actual case studies and experimental models must be accomplished.
