  • 초록

Sukhyangjon is one of the most popular ancient novels and is written in almost 40 different versions. It was written earlier than any other ancient novels. It is the best of sanctity novels. As the novel connotes the thought of "Return to the womb" and excludes Confucian ideas, it has been read widely by ordinary people who were oppressed by the father-centered family system. It has several versions including Korean versions, Korean-Chinese versions, and Chinese versions. Therefore, it is said that the novel has been written to speak for the potential desires of ordinary people. I'd like to sum up the year of creation, the character of each version, analysis of the work and mythical meaning of Sukhyang and meaning of Sukhyangjon. The year of creation: Considered the literature that reflects cultural and social pattens, the novel might have been written between 1689 and 1701 at the time of King Sukjong, Choson Dynasty. Bibliographical aspects: Among Korean versions, there are eighteen Philsabon, three kyopanbon, and one old letter version. Among Chinese versions, there are ten Philsabon, and one Walsabon one translation version. Among them, Ewha University version is not only the Korean version which is suitable for ordinary people but is also the good version which is one of unuasual complete versions. It is very similar to Simssi version which is thought to be the oldest version of different versions of Sukhyangjon. There isn't any transformation of content in it. It consists of two volumes. The titles are the first volume of Sukhyangjon and the second volume of Shukhyangjon. The anaysis of the work: when Korean old novels are divided into sanctity novels and common novels, most sanctity novels set up the dual world, which are the Heaven and the Earth. The work consists of the main character Shukhyang's penences. Shukhyang meets misfortune five times. Whenever Shukhyang was at a crisis, she managed the crisis with the help of transcendental beings including the Goddess of Earth, Angels, the God of Fire, the Goddess of Medicine, the God of Ocean. These penances meant passing ceremony like majority ceremony. Women's wild nature was revealed in the form of transformation. Particularly, she was ideal and creative figure whom the women of Chosun Dynasty under the father-centered family system seeked after. On the other hand, Yison was an official of the Lord of the Heaven. However, because of the guilt that sin that he committed when neate Woryondan that Sukhyang stole to give to him and wrote and replied the letter with her, he was driven out from the Heaven to the Earth. In short, he insisted free dating, marriage, monogamy but was forced to experience a lot of difficulties by direction of the Heaven. As a result, Yison was secondary figure who satisfied wild nature, which existed in women's unconsciousness in Choson Dynasty. The mythtical meaning of Sukhyang : A myth is the story which is believed mythtical by a race. It is based on their heart's wish. 17 century is a very confused period socially in Choson Dynasty. When it is thought that literature expresses the patterns and aspects of the time, Sukhyangjon could not help having the mythtical points. The main character Sukhyang was created on the corner from the times of the Great Mother to the times of Father-centered family system. Sukhyang was an ideal woman who had wild nature through transformation ordinary people was anxious for. The meaning analysis of Sukhyangjon: Shukhyang ate plants, such as nuts, flowers, tea leaves and so on. The animals including a monkey, a stork, a blue bird, a magpie, a turtle, a shaggy dog and a deer helped her. Death from drowning as a woman could be the basic standard for insisting the innocence. That could be the ceremony for death because death means new birth in myth or the law of nature. When she was in trouble with fire in reed woods, she survived by the help of the God of Fire. He had her take off her clothes, carried on his back and saved her. Therefore, Shukhyang was naked before she met the Goddess of Medicine. This means Shukhyang is in imperfect condition. After that, she met the Goddess of Medicine and she became a whole person. While she stayed at Ewhajong, she met angels in dream. She remembered the dream and embroiderd the view. According to analysis psychology, sewing and embroidering means sex. Threads and light means man's ejaculation. The character of the Goddess of Medicine as the Great Mother: Sukhyang was saved by transcendental beings including the Goddess of Medicine, the God of Fire, the God of Earth, the God of Ocean, Angels in the Earth. Among them, the Goddess of Mountain Medicine is the Great Mother who represents the symbol of maternity. It is found that the Goddess of Mountain Medicine had double symbols. Mountain means Goddess originally and also she has the character of benign mother. Her grave stands for creativity which means giving birth because it looks like the womb. The role of Sub-character : Whenever Shukhyang and Yison was in trouble, the transcendental beings appeared on the Earth and saved them. Particularly, at the opening part of Shukyangjon, her father saved the turtle (the God of Ocean) and was rewarded by it. The turtle suggests the character of the work is much supernatural. Like this, all sub-characters as supernatural beings helped Shukhyang and Yison grow the whole person.
