    The purpose of this study is to find out the teaching load of elementary school teachers and their perception toward the load. The major areas and activities considered to be over-loaded in this study are categorized as: teaching, counselling, preparing the school events and participating in such events, research and training, and the administrative works. A questionaire which is obtained from th 328 public elementary school teachers in Suwon and Osan City and Hwasung Gun, is used for this study. The respondents are grouped together by their sex, school size, the grade in chare, status, and teaching career. Group means are calculated for each item and χ2 test was used to compare the group means. The main results are as follows; In order to promote efficiency in the management of school system, to heighten the teachers' will to work, and to make them take the effective teaching activities, the excessive teaching load imposed upon the elementary school teachers should be reduced. The elementary school teachers use their much working hours in the teaching-activity, counselling and the research activities, etc. In spite of that, the existing school circumstances demand them the various side-works which are considered not to be related with the teaching-activities, such as: the administrative works, preparation for school events, and doing a day-duty etc. All of the teachers, therefore, are put to excessive teaching load, and so feel fatigue. What is still more sorry is that the working load of those who work at a small sized schools are heavier than that of the large sized school teachers. This may be due to the present system of personal allocation, that is the administrative assistant, subject specialist, and the nurse-teacher tend to be allocated more to the large school. And then the teachers working in such a small-sized school with 6 classes or under feel the excessive teaching load. The small sized school teachers do the administrative works, amount of which is not great different from that of the large school, And in addition to doing overtime work, they sometimes take the school business to their home, although they have no administrative assistant and they don't share in the benefits of the automation system. As the ways of reducing the teachers' overburden, it can be proposed that we should find out the way of simplified plan for the school events by the cautious consideration of the educational significance about them. In addition we have to reduce the teachers' overburden by assigning the administrative assistant to the small school. And also in substitute for the performance by a fixed schedule for school events, we should hold a meeting when it is needed only. These things above are the teachers' strong requests,. If the nation's financial assistance can be possible, adoption of the subject specialists should be increased. In that case, we can secure the time for the specialization of education and the researches into education. We would foster a good atmosphere to work for the teachers when we can abolish the differences of the teaching load between the small sized school and the large school. And in that time every teacher will be able to accomplish the effective educational activities for students with a flourishing will to work and a sense of duty.
