A Study on Improvement of English Listening Ability and Self-Directed Learning through Web Site

    The purpose of this study is to explore ways to develop and use Web sites for English learning in elementary school, to enhance the students' English Listening ability and Self-Directed Learning, and define the effectiveness of the Web-based Elementary English Learning. The subjects in this study were 42 fourth-grade students in the city of Ansan. After a pilot survey was conducted to find out the computer and Web knowledge of the students, instruction was offered to improve their ability to use computer and Web. A web site was developed and the students were asked to do English listening ability and self-directed learning in elementary English by using the web site at school and home. Then the effect of the web site on improving of English ability and Self-directed learning of the students were investigated by the questionnaire method, self-evaluated test, and the English listening evaluation. The Web site used in the study consisted of main and auxiliary sections. The main section and auxiliary sections were made up of three dfferent levels, high, intermediate and low so students could study on the use of this Web site as their levels and steps. The finding of this study are as below : First, the Web site was an excellent learning material that motivated the students to approach English learning with more interest and confidence. Many of the students agreed that the Web-based learning helps them have more interest in English learning and that the Web-based learning enabled them to have more confidence in English. Second, the Web-based learning was effective for self-directed learning. That was helpful for their individual learning and exerted a positive influence on their self-directed learning. The students were able to push ahead with self-directed learning efficiently by using the web site. Third, the Web site developed for English listening ability had a positive effect on English learning. The students were able to enhance their english listening skill by using the web site. Especially the students of the high level group showed greater enhanced listening comprehension than the other two groups. The above-mentioned findings showed that the Web was a medium that brought very favorable effect to the students' English listening ability and their self-directed English learning. The students could develop their own self-directed learning set by the Web, but there was a need for a medium to encourage and help their english listening ability and self-directed English learning. Also the elementary school students didn't yet have enough ability of information retrieval or processing. Therefore, the Web site developed by teacher would had a positive effect on the self-directed English learning of the elementary school students.
