(A) Study on Enhancing the Quality of Private Academy Education in Kyeongnam Province

The thesis of this study is that one of the alternative solutions to dealing with the current crisis of school education in Korea is to improve the quality of private academy education. The study first makes an analytical framework by describing conceptual and theoretical foundation of private academy education. Then the study analyses the present condition of academy education in Korea and finds out major problems by analyzing the case of Gyeongnam educational system. Relevant programs including are proposed to enhance desirable roles of academy education. The study is comprised of five chapters. Followed by the introduction of the goal and method of the study in Chapter one. As a theoretical background, chapter two describes the concepts of public and private education, the relationship between schools and private academy, the meaning, principles and social functions of private academy education. Chapter three focuses on the present condition of Korea's academy education and discusses current policy issues. By analyzing establishment, management and academic quality as major components of successful private academy education, this chapter points out major problems. Chapter four proposes relevant programs and ideas to solve the major problems. Alternative solutions to deal with the establishment of private academy, management issues and the academic quality are discussed. The final chapter summarizes the major ideas of this study and makes concluding remarks.
