In learning foreign languages, we should memorize not merely their words and study the linguistic structure and usage but also comprehend the underlying cognitive culture of the people. The latter has been one of the most important parts when we have a cross-cultural communication. Therefore, many linguists have studied on the methods to utilize the cultural application in learning and teaching foreign languages. The proverbs in a language are one of many integral parts of its own culture because they have been made through hundreds of years by many kinds of people in different walks of life. That is, proverbs show outlooks on life, ways of lives and personal and social relations of its speakers according to the cultural background. So I think proverbs are very important educational means to understand the cultural background of the target language. In this study I attempt to give comparative explanations about proverbs based on two different cultures, Korean and English. And also I try to consider the useful pedagogical application for English learners. Followings are the contents in this study for these educational effects: Chapter Ⅰ contains the instruction showing the object, ways, and procedures of this study. Chapter Ⅱ deals with the definition, the structure, and functions of proverbs. Chapter Ⅲ is the body of this study, and I classify and compare the proverbs in both culture. Comparing Korean proverbs with those of English, I conclude that there are much more similarities than differences in them. It means there are some linguistic instincts beyond cultural distinctions regardless of the nation. In Chapter Ⅳ, I suggest the useful application using data from the comparative research. Especially, I focus on the writing by translating Korean proverbs into English. As an important linguistic instrument proverbs not only give us lesson and warning but can be useful educational texts. So I hope teachers and students in many schools will utilize them effectively.
