    This study analyzed the changes in the ultimate bearing capacity and settlement according to different sizes and shapes of plates, in order to apply results of the plate loading test to non-homogeneous ground. The conclusions are shown in the following. (1) The ultimate bearing capacity and settlement increased as the plate size increased. However, absolute values of the ultimate bearing capacity varied according to qualities of each field. (2) The ultimate bearing capacity and settlement were generally not affected by the plate shapes. However, settlement was some what greater with round-shaped plate. (3) Greater bearing capacity was observed in the ground that had more gravels and sand and more settlement in the ground that had more clay and silt. This shows that the bearing capa city and settlement are closely related to soil condition.
