The study applied group art therapy to twenty of middle school underachievers, who wanted to participate in the program, to let them develop affirmative self-concept, and examined changes of their self-concept and analyzed the effects. The objects were each 20 students of experimental group and control group. The experimental group students, who wanted to participate in the program, were given group art therapy 2 times a week for 6 weeks, i.e., 12 times in total. The study adopted Park Seon-uk (2001)'s group art therapy program as a research tool. The study adopted a self-concept questionnaire, which Chung Won-sik adapted and revised, as measurement tool to inspect group art therapy effects. To examine group art therapy effects, the study conducted two-way ANOVA to verify difference between the groups (experimental group and control group) and the inspection (preliminary inspection and post inspection) regarding overall changes of self-concept as well as changes of each sub area. In summary, the results of the study are: First, the average of both experimental group and control group at self-concept inspection had no difference before group art therapy, while the average of experimental group was higher than that of control group after the therapy. This means that the group art therapy is effective to improve affirmative self-concept of middle school underachievers. Second, the group art therapy had an effect upon sub areas of self-concept at both experimental group and control group as follows: At preliminary inspection, there was no significant difference at physical self, moral self, personal self, domestic self and social self, etc. At post inspection, however, the group art therapy was found to be effective at physical self and social self, while it was ineffective at personal self and domestic self.
