The purpose of this study is to identify effects of Assertion Training Program on children's internal-external control and conformity to peers. We selected 30 students of 160 elementary school students who hope for participating in and have time for this program. This study aims at identifying changes of internal-external control and conformity to peers and clarifying the possibility for practical education by asserting effects after conducting Assertion Training Program. The subjects of study are divided into test group of 16 and controlled group of 15. The test group, who consented to participate in the program, conducted Assertion Training Program twice a week, 8 times for 4 weeks. Assertion Training Programs, tools of the study include "Assertion Training" by Kwon Myung-hee(1999), "Assertion Training" by Kim Yun-suk(1999) and "Assertion Program" by Lee Hyun-kyung and Kim Ae-ja(2002). These programs were reconstructed suitable for the sixth grade of elementary school. We used the test sheet of a scale for internal-external control for children developed by Korean Institute for Research in the Behavior Sciences(1981), partly modified by Kim In-cheon(1987), adding the test sheet modified from tools developed by Kim Eun-jin(2001) as a measuring tool for probating effects of the program. Then, we repeatedly measured and analyzed the difference between groups(test and controlled) and tests(before and after) on over-all changes of the scale for internal-external control and conformity to peers and subordinate factors of conformity to peers in order to identify effects of Assertion Training Program. Conclusions of this study are following. First of all, the result of this study shows that Assertion Training Program has an effect on increasing the level of internal control and decreasing external control of elementary school students in the sixth grade. Secondly, Assertion Training Program is effective for reducing participants' conformity to peers. In conclusion, it is obvious that Assertion Training Program has a positive effect on children's internal-external control and conformity to peers. The result shows that the program has an effect on decreasing antisocial behaviors, but doesn't have enough effect on neutral behaviors. It is because neutral behaviors are not harmful to the others and not regal. When students prefer a certain daily behavior, it means proposing their age to join with them to other activities. Most of the students already have ability for selecting their opinions without Assertion Training Program. Besides, Children lack of the ability are not willing to change their deep-rooted selection for morality within 4 weeks, short-term program. Therefore, only long-term counseling can change children's deep-rooted morality. This study suggests that Assertion Training Program can help children to reject reasonably the suggestion of socially unreasonable behaviors by others of their age by having them have the control ability of their behaviors and choices. Therefore, it also suggests that Assertion Training Program is needed to help children to behavior themselves at school.
