(A) Proposal for the Improvement in Culture Education in Elementary English Classes

In view of the fact that a language cannot be separated from the culture in which it is embedded, it is argued here that mastering a foreign language should be accomplished while learning the culture of the society where the language is used. This has been proved by numerous classroom practices and academic research in multi-cultural countries. Among the results of this research is the seventh National Curriculum. The purpose of the thesis is twofold: first, it investigate the conditions in which cultural aspects of English are actually being taught; second, it makes some suggestions for the improvement of cultural education. The study is based on the analysis of the seventh National Curriculum for English in Elementary Schools and of the teacher's guides, with special reference to cultural education. A survey of teachers is also carried out in order to uncover their opinions about the situations they face in elementary English class. The research reveals that a number of problems await to be solved for the improvement in the teaching of cultural aspects. Some suggestions for improving culture education in elementary English education are made as follows: First, The number of English lessons should be increased if all the goals of the National English Curriculum are to be accomplished. Second, the “cultural aspects required to be taught in elementary English education” should be related to the language itself. Third, the cultural aspects to be taught should be included in the lesson plans given in the teacher's guides. Fourth, a variety of teaching methods and materials should be developed to make English Culture Education more effective in elementary schools. Finally, in service education programs should including the teaching of the culture.
