Recently, the stepping motor is used in many industrial areas. The stepping motor is an electrical motor which converts a digital electrical input into a mechanical motion. Compared with the other systems, the stepping motors do not require feedback components for position control or speed control because position error is non-cumulative. However, stepping motors have some problems. They have vibration at low speed, fixed step angle and resonance at specific frequency. In this paper, studied on the one-chip design of using CPLD for the micro-stepping drive having 5-phase Pentagon Type winding. Micro-stepping is a method in order to eliminate effectively the resonant phenomena and to increase the positional resolution. This paper proposed trapezoidal current waveform for current control and provided design method by using only one-chip IC. Therefore the drive will be simple and small size. Finally the above study has been implemented on the VHDL. Simulation and test results are performed to verify the PWM for micro-stepping drive. The improvement of the electrical and mechanical driving characteristic of a step motor is achieved by applying microstep driver.
