    The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Milieu-based language intervention on the spontaneous and reactive speech of children with mental retardation. The research problems were posed as below: First, does Milieu-based verbal intervention increase the spontaneous speech of mentally retarded children? Second, does Milieu-based verbal intervention increase the reactive speech of mentally retarded children? Third, what is the impact of Milieu-based verbal intervention on the duration of mentally retarded children's speaking? The subjects in this study were three mentally retarded children in special class from D elementary school in Busan, who were selected by using all sorts of instruments. The Milieu-based language intervention program was carried out in 20 sessions from March 20 through May 31, 2003, twice a week, 20 minutes each. The program used in this study was prepared based on the Korea Institute for Special Education(1988)'s language education program for student with developmental disability and Lee Yeoung-mi(2000)'s study on the effect of communication program on children with mild mental retardation. They included six themes that could have appeal to the children, and the Milieu-based verbal intervention strategy was applied sequentially. The multiple probe design across subjects was employed, and the intervention was provided first to the child who was best stabilized in base line, and the next intervention was offered to another child with the second best stability in base line when the first intervention started to take effect. And the last intervention was provided to the third children in the same manner. To serve the purpose of this study, the spontaneous and reactive speech of the mentally retarded children was recorded by this researcher in every session, and a profile about their frequencies was prepared. And then another profile was produced about the average length of spontaneous speech. The findings of this study were as follows: First, the Milieu-based language intervention served to augment the spontaneous speech of the mentally retarded children. Second, the Milieu-based verbal intervention had an effect on boosting the reactive speech of the mentally retarded children. Third, the Milieu-based verbal intervention was effective for furthering the mean duration of the spontaneous speech of the mentally retarded children. Fourth, the increased spontaneous and reactive speech of the mentally retarded children and the duration of speech remain unchanged even after the intervention was withdrawn. As a consequence, the Milieu-based language intervention had a good effect on improving the spontaneous and reactive speech of the mentally retarded children and the duration of their speech. However, the findings of this study might not be generalizable, since only three mentally retarded children participated in the experiment on a short-term basis. In the future, it's needed to make more research efforts on a long-term basis to cover a larger number of subjects and produce more objective and generalizable results.
