The purpose of this study is to establish a theory through the research on the modern essays, especially those which have been based on the anecdotic essays. The theory of an anedotic essay that this paper try to study is defined as a kind of essay literatures that aims to discover the essential significance of life and give aesthetic pleasure to readers by being based on or making examples of anecdotes. An anecdote refers to the description of what happened in reality or specific incidents that could take place in the life of real persons. Specific incidents refer to the deviation that means deviating from normal and normative behaviors. Therefore, the deviation of an anecdote, in accordance with the characteristics of its contents, can be divided into the deviation outward, the deviation downward, and the deviation upward. While the deviation outward means the words or behaviors forgetting or deviating from social norms for a while, the distinction based on the value of the character's words and behaviors belongs to the deviation downward and upward at the same time. If an anecdote is added to an essay, each feature is not just added arithmetically, but get together and is changed into a new union. For the one thing, the change that an anecdote gives to the essay could be found in that the anecdote is refined properly for the general function of essay literatures, morality, which is the reason the deviation upward has been appeared frequently most. A writer leads readers naturally to open their eyes through the stories in which the behaviors of the characters go far beyond the comtemporary norms. Next, another change in an essay with an anecdote is in that the anecdotic characteristics are accepted significantly. An anecdote in which a few words and behaviors are put in the heart of the affair takes a simple construction with extreme causes and effects rather than deliver a message through the complicated conflict structures just like a novel does. As trying to discover the essential meaning of life and to give aesthetic pleasure to readers by making the anecdote a foundation or example, it is natural for an anecdotic essay to have a story-centered characteristic in its content. The fact that an anecdotic essay is not constructed with the relationship of arithmetic addition could be proved by dividing the anecdotic essay into an anecdote division and an essay division. An essay division separated from an anecdotic essay cannot be completed as an independent field, which is different from an anecdotic division. Such dependence of an essay division of which the meaning would be completed on the assumption of an anecdote suggests that there be some distinctive properties between general essays and anecdotic essays. This paper suggests three crucial distinctive properties as the characteristics of anecdotic essays. First, an anecdotic essay has a dual structure of an anecdote division and an essay division. As mentioned before, while an anecdotic division is independent, an essay division has a characteristic of dependence. Second, an anecdotic essay has two types of narrators; a narrator of the anecdote and a narrator outside the anecdote. The narrator of the anecdote is the one who controls the anecdote division, has nothing to do with stories out of the anecdote, and just takes the role of describing it. He/she usually makes an introduction to lead an anecdote to come out naturally at the preface of an essay. However, his/her primary role is to finish up the sense of the subject matter suggested generally by an anecdote after specifying it in various ways. Third, in an anecdotic essay, there is a series of processes of thinking that is supposed to discover the significance of life on a basis or examples of anecdotes. An anecdotic essay can be divided into the former division and the latter division by an anecdote. An anecdote is likely to be presented in the former division and develope the following types of processes of thinking; ① one which presents an anecdote and recall the content of it without applying any specific thought process,② one which take an anecdote as a foundation to come to a conclusion by applying the thought process on a basis of the relationship between the foundation and the central content rather than the relationship between the foundations, ③ one which compares and contrasts anecdotes by applying the thought process of inference with the center of an anecdote. This paper calls the processes of thinking ① a type of reflection ② a type of demonstration, and ③ a type of inference respectively. The inference type of thought process is supposed to be classified into the comparative relation-inference type and contrasting relation- inference type in accordance with the ways of their development. Those thought processes are important in that they provide the foundations to point out the errors appeared in the way of constructing the content of an essay and expressing the subject matter. The theory of an essay with an anecdote in this paper is the result of analyzing 69 anecdotic essays, which doesn't mean there are only 69 anecdotic essays in Korea. To generalize the theory, the tasks to explore and examine the anecdotic essays which have not been dealt with in this paper should be done in the near future.
