Behavioral Characteristics of Children with School Maladaptation and their Causes

    The purpose of this study is to examine characteristics of elementary school children with school maladaptation and their causes. For the purpose, this research raised the following research questions. ① What are behavioral characteristics of children with school maladaptation ? ② What are home characteristics of children with school maladaptation ? To obtain answers to these questions, this researcher surveyed 10 children with severe school maladaptation and their teachers and parents through interviews. The children were selected from total 739 fifth and sixth grade students of D elementary school located in Changwon. Results of the study showed that children having school maladaptation have the main three behavioral characteristics as below when ways of communication and education and climates of their home were analyzed. Behavioral characteristics of children with school maladaptation and their causes can be described as follows. First, aggressive children with school maladaptation frequently quarreled with others and annoyed and physically attacked peers. These behaviors appeared to be caused by closed, unilateral communications at home, violent home education and confrontations among family members. Second, withdrawn children with school maladaptation were too silent and had the sense of high inferiority. They could not get along with others and live school life smoothly. Their school maladaptation could be attributed to family diseases, parents' divorce, those children's poor academic performance and physical deficiencies and parents' unilateral and closed communications. Third, immature children with school maladaptation lacked in skills for coping with environmental requirements, so they could not adapt themselves to group activities. This seemed to be caused by inattention and inappropriate nursing by parents who were suffering from economic difficulties and busy in work. In conclusion, behavioral characteristics of aggressive, withdrawn and immature children were heavily dependent on factors related to home such as ways of education and construction and home climates. To solve children's school maladaptation, causes of the problem should be found out in regard to not only children themselves but also their whole family. Behaviors by such problematic children greatly influence emotions of all of their classmates 19. But it is fact that teachers can't give practical help to those children because they have a burden of excessive tasks, lack in related experts, no interest in school maladaptation, and limits in home education investigation and interviews with parents. Thus children with school maladaptation should be dealt with by professional counseling teachers. Ways of instructing those children should be studied in connection with their teachers and parents. And supports should be provided to solve those children's problems from perspectives of educational administration.
