The community consciousness tends to be more important in the contemporary societies than the previous societies because the individualism, autonomy, self-identity may be the salient mottos of the contemporary societies. But I think that the community consciousness can be compatible with these values entirely. So the community consciousness must be fostered systematically in the earlier age. As one of the preliminary studies, this study attempts to compare the community consciousness which the elementary pupils have with that which their parents think the children may have. To achieve this aim more effectively, the following sub-questions were asked and inquired. (1) What kind of level is the elementary pupils' community consciousness of their own and perceived by their parents, and is there any difference between them? (2) Is there any difference of the elementary pupils' community consciousness of their own according to the related variables such as their gender, grade, academic achievements, living conditions, their parents' schooling, vocation, etc.? (3) Is there any difference of the elementary pupils' community consciousness perceived by their parents according to the above variables? Two kinds of research instruments were constructed in this thesis by the help of some professionals. The one is the questions for the community consciousness of the elementary pupils themselves. The other, for the community consciousness of the elementary pupils perceived by their parents. But these two instruments were included in the one questionnaire. The number of subjects was 966, who consist of 328 third-grade pupils and 328 of their parents, 337 sixth-grade pupils and 337 of their parents. This is the selected number excluding the pupils and parents who didn't answer the questions sincerely. Frequencies and percentage were calculated and t and F test were applied to the statistical analyses. The findings of this thesis may be summarized as follows: (1) The level of the elementary pupils' community consciousness is a little high above the average in both their own(M=3.60) and that perceived by their parents(M=3.91). There is some significant difference between them. (2) There are some significant differences in the elementary pupils' community consciousness of their own according to the related variables. That is, the level of the community consciousness in the third-grade pupils is higher than that in the sixth-grade pupils, that of the females is higher than that of the males, that of the urban pupils is higher than that of the rural pupils. The level of the community consciousness in the higher-achieving pupils is higher than those in the average and lower-achieving pupils, and this is the case in the economic status and the parents' schooling. There is no significant difference of the level of the community consciousness in the vocation of their fathers. But there is some significant difference in the vocation of their mothers, esp. the level of that is the highest in the full-time housewife. (3) There are some significant differences in the elementary pupils' community consciousness perceived by their parents according to the related variables. But these differences are the same as those of the elementary pupils' own community consciousness except in both the grade and the vocation variables. There are no significant differences of that perceived by their parents in the grade and the vocation variables.
