(The) Effect of English Instruction Utilizing Written English Advertisement on English Listening Ability and Learning Interest of Middle School students with English Underachievers

The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of English instruction utilizing written English advertisement based on its script using life centered learning materials which help students with English underachievers be able to participate in English learning activities without any psychological handicapped on the English listening ability and Learning Interest middle school students with English underachievers. We investigated a general concept and characteristics of underachieved ability, interest of middle school students in English and advertisement as a intermediary for listening English and English education in theoretical background. The subjects of this study were selected as eight students with English underachievement on the second grade in ○○ middle school in K city. They were selected by individual intelligence quotient test(K-WISCⅢ), discrimination test for middle school students with basic and fundamental underachievement(2001) and a yearly mean of English listening test for the middle school first grade(2002) managed by nationwide provincial and city offices of education as discrimination instruments.English instruction utilizing scripts of English advertisements were carried out in a multimedia room 4 times a week for 40∼45 minutes per sessions and totally enforced 40 sessions. To know subject students' English listening ability, we united three subordinate positional factors included in a factor of listening ability test - to find specific information, to measure the degree of understanding and ability solving a problem - as one variable and enforced repeated measurement analysis of variance(Repeated Measurement ANOVA) to examine the change of score by the degree of difficulty and the effect by having pre·post and delayed tests. The degreed of improvement in English learning interest was proved by F-test with pre·post questionnaires and the difference was examined at p=.05 level. As a result of test, we can know that there is a statistically meaningful difference by factors of English listening ability in the result of pre·post tests and English learning interest was comparatively increased. The results of this study are like followings. First, utilizing written English advertisement script to improve listening ability in the parts of finding specific information, measuring the degree of understanding and solving problems among the factors testing English listening ability of middle school students with English underachievers had a meaningful effect on improving English listening ability. Therefore, it can be considered to be one of the effective English listening teaching methods for improving English listening ability. Second, middle school students with English underachievers can be said that it influenced on their ability positively, because there was change in the students' interest in English learning during the classes. More replication studies are needed to generalize the results of this study, because we examined only a few factors among factors testing English listening only to several limited subjects on the limited grade.
