    Internet may be one of the most powerful media and foundation of the informationized society characteristic of the contemporary civilization. Internet has some functions and dysfunctions simultaneously. So using Internet can be one of the important educational concerns. As one of the preliminary studies, this study attempts to survey the relationship of three variables in the middle school students: the self-concept, the academic achievement and using Internet. To achieve this aim more effectively, the following sub-questions were asked and inquired. (1) How do the middle school students use Internet? (2) To what extent do the middle school students use Internet? (3) What kind of relationship is there between the ways of using Internet and the self-concept in the middle school students? (4) What kind of relationship is there between the ways of using Internet and the academic achievement in the middle school students? (5) What kind of relationship is there between the degree of using Internet and the self-concept in the middle school students? (6) What kind of relationship is there between the degree of using Internet and the academic achievement in the middle school students? Three research instruments were developed in this thesis by the help of some professionals. These are the questions about the ways and degree of using Internet and the self-concept. But these three instruments were included in the one questionnaire. The number of subjects were 366, who consist of 77 eighth-grade male students, 79 female students in town and 90 male, 90 female in county. This is the selected number excluding the pupils who didn't answer the questions sincerely. Frequencies and percentage were calculated. T-test, F-test and correlation coefficient were applied to the statistical analyses. The findings of this thesis may be summarized as follows: (1) The most frequency of using Internet time is 1-4 hours per week. The middle school students think that the portion of using Internet is not a little in leisure time. They rarely use Internet without the recognition of their parents. While the males usually use Internet with the online games, the females the chattings. Internet is mainly set up and used in their own rooms and living rooms. (2) The degree of using Internet is rather high but not abused (M=48.64). (3) There is no significant correlation between the ways of using Internet and the self-concept in the middle school students. (4) There is no significant correlation between the ways of using Internet and the academic achievement in the middle school students. (5) There is some negative correlation between the degree of using Internet and the self-concept in the middle school students. (6) There is some negative correlation between the degree of using Internet and the academic achievement in the middle school students.
