  • 초록

Gusang has been producing poems from 1946 to the present. Well-versed in the philosophies and religions of East and West, he has constructed his own unique worlds of poetry based on existentialism and phenomenology, giving himself to the exploration of the essence of being and the universe on a continuous basis. As a result, he was appointed as an applicant for a Nobel prize twice: 1999 and 2000. Despite his importance in Korean literature, precedent studies on him leave much to be desired for he is still alive. They focus on the external contents of his poems. With this in mind, the researcher made an analysis of the structure of his works on the basis of the poet's views on the world. The poet forms a penetrating view on reality and history. Being a catholic, he has a good and integrative understanding of Buddhism and Taoism. His insight has been reflected on his works as materials or themes. This study is designed to focus on his understanding of various religions and the reflection of such enlightenment on his poems. As a result, there are three kinds of characteristics in his poems. The following are the findings. 1. Structure from Chaos to Order This structure relates to life or completed universe. He thinks that the 21st century's existence, or 'self' is overwhelmed by the aspects of confusion and that one should come up with an order or truth. It is worthwhile to notice that order is regarded as 'everlasting life' and that God exists there. This means that he is aware of God's omnipresence. It is most common that this structure is found in his poems. 2. The Harmonious Composition of Heaven, Earth and Men This structure is a more specified form of the structure above. The oriental views of the world can be explained by the principles of heaven, earth and men. The principle of the trinity in the East relates to the three factors of heaven, earth and men. Heaven begets things and men help heaven to complete the world. Although he is a catholic, he is deeply immersed in such oriental ideologies as Buddhism and Taoism. Now that his work is always connected with existence, life, and exploration of the universe in the phenomenological perspective, his views on the completion of the world is kept aligned with the principle of the oriental trinity. This principle is embodied in the form of God existing with heaven, earth and men in harmony with one another. 3. The Structure of the Cosmic Dual Forces and the Five Elements This structure is based on Ying and Yang, the cosmic dual forces with a view to explaining the mechanism of the universe through the theory. The poet pays much attention to the phenomenological awareness of truth pursuit, nature, God and the universe, seeing to it that the pursuit of universal truth is reflected on his poems at large. This fact keeps aligned with the cosmic dual forces and the five elements of the East. As mentioned before, Gusang's views on religions and the world are closely related with the basic principles of the East thoughts(the Cosmic Dual Forces and the Five Elements) reflected on his works. Specifically speaking, the basic principles of the East thoughts include co-existence, jeolhu Ohaeng, bangui Ohaeng and Saek Ohaeng, etc. y
