To master accurate pronunciation in learning a language is very important to communicate. But learners, especially students, commit errors for various reasons. Because it becomes more difficult to correct the wrong pronunciations as they are getting older, to teach accurate pronunciations and to correct the errors of middle school students must not be overlooked. So the purpose of this thesis is to analyze these errors dealing with interference caused by differences between their native language and English, and to recommend some effective teaching methods. For the research, contrastive analysis and error analysis are being used in this thesis. First, students pronounce English consonants and vowels which are not in Korean wrongly, for example, /f/ → /p/ or /æ/ → /애/. Second, they tend to aspirate in spite of a unaspirate, for example, 'speak' /spik/ → [sp^(h)ik]. Third, they insert vowel /∂/ in consonants clusters unnecessarily. Fourth, they commit errors by transferring Korean rules to English. For example, 'that man' /ðæt mæn/ → /ðæn mæn/. Finally, they have difficulties in suprasegmental parts such as accents, juncture, stress, intonations and so on. Therefore, teachers should understand the principles of Korean language and English. A comparison of the student's native language and the language to be learned furnishes a basis for better description of the language learning problems involved and for preparation of teaching materials. They can use several effective methods and materials. But the methods they use in classrooms have to be easy and interesting enough for students to understand easily. Teachers can also use pictures, songs, and games for that. Also through audio, video and many other materials, teachers can help students for better pronunciation.
