Static and Dynamic Characteristics Analysis for a Balance Piston Type Relief Valve

In this thesis, a theoretical model describing the static and dynamic characteristics of a balance piston type relief valve with three stage operations is presented. Currently, balance piston type relief valves are used widely in industry field as pressure control valves which are commonly known as safety valves. The main issue of balance piston type relief valves was selected based on field survey. From the field survey data, the influences on the performance of balance piston type relief valves can be determined. This thesis is focused on solving the main issues of balance piston type relief valves such as leakage before cracking and poor pressure set. Based on the data produced, the influences of the system parameters on the static and dynamic characteristics of a balance piston type relief valve have been analyzed so that the parameters are adopted as system parameters in order to keep relief valve's performance stable in industry field. The proposed model was verified by using flow and pressure measurements at each stage of operation and then compared to experimental results. Some design parameters from the proposed model can be set up for stable balance piston type relief valves.
