(A) Study on the Life-Education Contents in Moral Studies of Elementary School

Today's biggest problem in our society is disregarding life. This phenomenon and environmental pollution put not only human life but nature, which is the origin of life, at serious risk. The purpose of this study was to accentuate the necessity of education about the worth of life and to show some of the new directions for life-related elementary moral education as an alternative to tide over such a crisis of life. The trend to make little of human life has been compounded due to the spread of materialism, and the development of ergonomics results in making people pay less attention to the dignity of life. The human-centered idea, which was the foundation of modernization, made a big contribution to justifying the oughtness of conquest of nature, and has triggered environmental pollution and the destruction of ecosystem. Now it's time to shed new light on life. Both existing and young generations should learn the preciousness of life and respect it, and the best way to make it happen seems to change a mind-set by applying well-planned curriculum on a long-term basis. To teach the worth of life, people should be awaken to the dignity of human life and pursue a nature-friendly life. It's required to make an ecological approach to education to have the right understanding of the relationship of human and nature and prize the worth of nature and every creature. And education of ecological approach should be well grounded in tradition that stressed harmony between man and nature, and that should comply with the fashion of the day at the same time. In addition, there should be lots of changes in school curriculum: First, life-education should primarily be conducted in moral instruction that pursues human respect and the right values, as the object of moral education is having learners respect human and inspiring them with new values that could address the needs of society. Second, teachers need a change of mind-set. It cannot be expected to provide systematic, sustained and successful education to children without their change of viewpoint. They should be given more chances to take training courses about the value of life and improve their own awareness, and various types of materials should be prepared for their training. Third, textbook should be newly prepared. That should deal with the extended concept and nature of life, human dignity and human value, and raise a question about the crisis of life and growing trend to make light of life caused by the advance in science and technology. And that should cover the value of nature and its relationship with man. Particularly, medical ethics and ergonomics should be instructed, which are points at issue and draw attention from children. To modify current situations, education about life should be offered on a systematic basis in a manner to help learners match their action with their knowledge, and that education is especially important for elementary school youngsters who will take the lead in future society. The education community should fulfill its role to teach learners to wake up to the importance of human life, see man and nature from new angle and pursue coexistence between man and nature.
