    Sewage causes the water system pollution in rural areas. Constructed wetlands typically cost less to build and operate, and require less energy than mechanical treatment technology in urban areas but they have similar performance to centralized wastewater treatment plants. Therefore, they were constructed especially many in rural areas, where are small villages but not industries. We surveyed the sewage treatment efficiency using a zeolite-filled reed bed. The sewage was the wastewater from Changwon National University dormitory. The sewage was fed into the reed bed for 10 minutes every 6 hours at the hydraulic load of 314L/m^(2)·day. The mixture consisted of the same volume of two types of zeolites ; 0.5~1mm and 1~3mm in diameter. The filtering height of the reed bed was 100cm. During experimental period, pH in effluent was decreased a little while DO concetration was increased regardless of bed types. Annual average removal efficiency of SS, BOD, COD_(Cr), T-N, NH_(4)^(+)-N and T-P were 89.9, 93.3, 86.1, 34.0, 97.3 and 34.6% respectively for the vertical bed and 88.5, 93.9, 86.1, 48.6, 97.1 and 42.8% respectively for the horizontal bed. Most of T-N in effluent was composed of NO_(3)^(-)-N and NO_(2)^(-)-N concentration was below 0.10mg/L in both type reed beds. Most of T-P was adsorbed in the upper area of the reed bed. The major portion of adsorbed phosphorus was composed of Fe-, Ca- and reductant soluble Fe-P.
