Chronical process of Variation is examined and Mendelssohn's Variation Se'rieuses which contains such features of chronical process are analyzed in order to grasp chronical features that Classical form and Romantic technique and color are mixed as the feature of the Romantic piano Variation. Mendelssohn's Variation Srieuses shows Variation Ornament style. For example, it perfectly follows the style in which theme is divided into two sections, each structure of variations keeps d minor of thematic tonality, and also 18 variations are all 2/4 time and has no change in time. However, it deviates from the original style as a lot of ornament is added to its melody. Introduction of special effects such as diverse changes of rhythm and stacato decorated the Variation in splendor. In addition, harmony, which consists of secondary dominant 7th chord and diminished 7th chord, and modulation presents Romantic technique. In practical performance, while each variation is conducted, frequent use of secondary chord and the attachment of compound chord, additinal chord makes very colorful Romantic effects. It is found that the Variation used the character variation's features by taking advantage of the variation of melody, rhythm, tempo, and musical range as features of Romanticism with Classical creative spirit. In general, it is often defined that Classicism is classified into ornamental variation and Romanticism is classified into character variation in style. However, analysis of the music in this thesis shows not that Romanticism has been separated from Classicism but that it has developed and changed according to the flow of the times. In conclusion, it is more firmly proved that character variation, which was prevalent in Romanticism, created new style under the influence of Classical style.
