Stress and Self-Esteem of Hearing impaired students by Educational placement

This study focuses on the investigation about the stress and self-esteem of hearing impaired students, according to educational placement. Seventy five hearing impaired students were investigated in this study. But sixty three students' data were analyzed in stress level description because of missing data. And seventy two students' data were analyzed in self-esteem level description because of missing data. Stress Scale(Reconstructed in this study based on previous instruments) and Self-esteem Scale(Based on the Rosenberg, 1965) were administered to the subjects. Reliability of Stress Scale was α= .87, and Reliability of Self-esteem Scale was α=.79. The findings of the present study were as follow: First, Educational environment affect the level of stress between the hearing impaired students in an elementary course, which proves that the hearing impaired students in general elementary schools suffer more stress than those in special schools for the handicapped. Second, the level of stress does not make differences between the hearing impaired students, regardless of their grades in school. Third, the educational environment can affect self esteem, which proves that the hearing impaired students attending special schools have higher self esteem than those attending general elementary schools. Fourth, there are differences in self esteem between the hearing impaired students in the elementary course, according to the degree of the handicap, and in the elementary course, the deaf students have more self-esteem than the hard of hearing students.
