    According to Korean Waste Management Act and Treaty of London, sewage sludge was not able to landfill directly and ocean dumping by steps. It is considered that incineration is the best one of alternative processes. However, incineration of sewage sludge is very expensive, because of low heating value. To reduce fuel expense, co-combustion with combustible wastes is considered. To develope an appropriate process for the co-combustion of municipal solid waste and sewage sludge, a fluidized bed incineration was applied. We used sawdust and digested sewage sludge, both of which were dried and pulverized, 1kg/hr scaled fluidized bed reactor was used for the experiments, powdered or pelletized combustible mixture was also used for the co-combustion of them. To estimate combustibles feeding methods for the co-combustion, the combustion characteristics such as temperature profile, the concentration of exhaust gas and the amount of fly ash were measured and analyzed. Temperature distribution was as the following order: pellet > sawdust > powder > pellet > sludge , although the highest calorific value of sample was sawdust. Because, the burning of pellet occurred in all parts of the reactor including the freeboard and the fluidized bed. The CO concentration in burning pellet was the lowest of the samples, and the reason was due to the uniformity of the burning characteristic of pellet in the reactor. The emission rate of fly ash in the pellet burning was higher than that of the powder burning about 10 times. However, in the side of the exhaust gas treatment facility, treatment of fly ash in the pellet burning is easier than that of in the powder burning. As a result of this experiments, it was concluded that the pelletizing and feeding of them was the most effective process fot the co-combustion of sawdust and sludge in a fluidized bed incinerator.
