    This study was done to find out an effect which school work adopting STS program has on the academic achievement and the attitude towards science of a physically handicapped student with learning disabilities and low achievement. Objects of this study were 43 junior high school students of the third grade at the special school for the physically handicapped in Pusan. Among them 22 students were an experiment group and the rest 21 students were a control group. 2 science teachers and I taught the class. The class materials were abstracted from common science chapters of the 9th grade of People Common Education Course. A method of study is that the experiment group was given a class adopting STS program and the control group was given a class with a lecture led by a teacher. Tests of academic achievement and the attitude towards science were done before and after the study and the experiment group was given a questionnaire on a class with STS program. The outcome of the study is summarized below: First, for the experiment group the grade of the academic achievement test after study increased as 10.18, whereas for the control group it decreased as 0.52. Second, about the result of the overall attitude, the grade of the experiment group rose as 17.4 after study, while that of the control group rose as 1.7 after study. In the analysis of each field, the experiment group shows statistically meaningful differences in all fields - an attitude towards science, a social meaning of science, an attitude towards science education, a scientific attitude. Third, there was an affirmative response to an induction of interest, a teaching method, an ability and an attitude of academic achievement in the STS program questionnaire. The conclusion of this study drawn from outcomes above is followed: First, physically handicapped students in the experiment group with STS program shows more improvements than those in the control group with a lecture led by a teacher. Second, physically handicapped students in the experiment group with STS program represent affirmative changes in all 4 fields - an attitude towards science, a social meaning of science, an attitude towards science education, a scientific attitude than those in the control group. In conclusion, for a change in the academic achievement and the attitude towards science of a physically handicapped student with learning disabilities and low achievement, the experiment group with STS program is more effective than the control group with a lecture led by a teacher.
